Sadly, decided I want to do further study. How the hell do I convince the tutors that I am good enough to stay on? I got a firsts in the relevant modules, but the rest are just average/low 2:1. Gah.
In what? Easy way is to get a job in it and get them to fund it. Lots of friends at BoE or GES doing postgrad economics. Even someone at the FSA doing postgrad politics, though that's harder to sell to them. Getting into either at Oxford needs firsts though, and even then I've seen people rejected

Civil service? Parliamentary researcher? But I guess they'd more want masters of public policy or public administration. I guess if you become Union President you can use the rest of the year out to do academic stuff and make sure you get the 1st?

Apparently my coursework was a lot better than I was told it'd be before I handed it in, but I still don't know actual marks yet... am very intrigued to see just how bad stats actually was!

Incidentally trying to do powerpoints for these access-y talks I'm meant to be doing.

Have to do one about Life as a Student and am completely stuck... done bits about what to expect in terms of contact time, independent study, extra curriculars, socialising (i.e. it's not all clubs!) and part time jobs... What else is there to say?!

food, maybe- hall, self catering, cafes + restaurants, kebab vans(?). I guess you could talk about sport as an EC distinct from clubs and societies etc if you need to buff it out.

Well this is the worst thing - it's not just Oxford (got a whole other talk on that) they just want an hour on "Life as a Student". And I'm just like... would you like to see my diary? Would you like an overview of Oxford? It's too big a thing to generalise really

the only thing i can think of is money-management (student discounts, loans, saving tips etc) but that's maybe a bit heavy and not very appropriate for an access talk...

I'm pretty sure there was a list up somewhere giving the classifications of second years, I'm sure I've seen it posted in the comlab. They weren't posting online two years ago so can't help you with that.
A maths+comp guy told me he thought out results would be out in 10th week, but my tutor told me recently they could be as early as this wed cause he'd finished marking all his. So I could have a whole week of nervous checking! Argh!

What the **** is up with the maths part A examiners? They have literally destroyed my degree. Despite algebra being one of my strongest topics and being able to do most past paper questions i couldnt do a single on in these last two papers, it was ridiculous. And no long question contour integration despite it being pretty much the whole point of the complex analysis course. Ugh, based on performance so far im headed straight for that third!

If it's all unis then it's very hard. I generally shy away from doing this, as I know people at other unis had a very different amount of contact time, number of lecture, importance of sports and societies (being all university, not college based), way of socialising (again, the collegiate structure), importance of academic work, etc. There's very little in common.

If I have to, I usually give the overview about things like living away from home, taking responsibility for your own studying, general social life changes, and emphasise the wide variety between different universities and cities and the importance of going to a university that suits you.

It's not just you Dom - one of my friends who was on for a low first came out shaking uncontrollably yesterday in floods of tears. I assumed she'd just had a bad exam - it was her "best paper" and she's always set very high standards - til she said she'd answered 1 question out of 9 Do YOU know what an epimorphism is?!

"You're being chased by a crocidile- how fast do you have to run to avoid being eaten?"
    "faster than the crocidile?"
"no no- you just need to be faster than the guy next to you"

As my supervisor said of my ADSA exam- "they can't fail everybody".

You say that - last year the mean mark for QM dropped more than 10% because the paper is so sucky... Sure they can't fail everyone, but it's no guarantee that you won't still get a 3rd.
