# maths question help watch

1. hey all this is a question on sea floor spreading
it should be fairly basic I just cant get my head around it

Calculate the volume of basaltic magma that is producedalong a 1km length of an ocean spreading centre in one million years, assumingthat the total spreading rate is 5cm a year. Use average crustal thickness of6km and give your answer in cubic metres
thanks

OK so this is what I think its trying to say, I could well be wrong...

The crust that's formed at this divergent margin is gonna have to be 6km thick and 1km long (all in the question). Now the width is found by multiplying the 5cm per year by the million years that it's spreading. That gives you (*dusts off calculator I haven't touched since A-levels in June*) 50km
To get the volume you multiply the values of the width, length and thickness together. However, the answer asks for the value in cubic metres so before whacking them into a calculator just write them in metre form first. There we have 6000, 1000 and 50000. Multiply together and voila!
