    How do you know whats takes number 1 position on the ring i.e 3-chloronitrobenzene, is nitro number 1 as it weights the most or how does this work

    I assume the nitro does but i would have thought that the nitro would have had a number in front of it to indicate its position

    There is a kind of system of priorities, which roughly follows the oxidation state of the atom attached to the ring...

    So carboxylic acid is more important than aldehyde which is more important than alcohol (phenol)...

    ... but it's not rigorous as there are unexpected variations, so you basically just have to learn them.
