Why would men throughout history in every culture "oppress" women under Patriarchy, given that these men have mothers, wives, sisters, daughters?

Do you think that all men throughout history are bad and evil?

I propose an alternative: men throughout history loved their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters, and made great sacrifices to provide for and to protect them.

Many men throughout history have died on battlefields, in mines, while exploring and while constructing the modern world.

Did the men storming the beaches of Normandy think "Ha, this will oppress our women!" while smirking the trollface?

"Yay, running into machine gun fire will really oppress women!"

Or were they motivated by their love of their women, children and country?

Men reach positions of power and status through service to others, through providing value to others, not through oppressing them.

Men are very motivated to acquire power, status and wealth to attract and keep women, not to oppress them.

The fact men overwhelmingly dominate the upper reaches of every field is because men reproductively benefit from success and don't have any other option to acquire wealth, power or status - whereas women reproductively benefit much less from their own success (men are attracted to youth and beauty in women, not money, power or status), and women can theoretically seduce a rich, powerful man and get money / status / power without all the hard work and sacrifice.

If you believe there's a "Patriarchy" that conspires to oppress women you have some very limiting self-beliefs that are going to damage your relations with men.

What do you think leads to men dominating the top of nearly every field? Do you think men work hard and make huge sacrifices to oppress women or to seduce and keep them?

women are *really* not oppressed these days.
think about this fact: they get equal pay, and we as a culture see that as a legitimate thing (as we rightly should). but, men still have to pay for women when they are in relationships with women, and we see *this* as a legitimate thing. pretty ****ing messed up. surely we as men, if this second convention remains, *need* that extra money for women? at least the ones that aren't single

I would say that women themselves often play a big part in keeping gender double standards alive and well, certainly no less than men do.

Oh I completely agree. Women enjoy many privileges, and if anything are the "privileged" gender right now. I'm trying to get into the mindset of feminists who think that men as a group conspire to oppress women.

Of course, there are a few disgusting men who do horrible things to women e.g. rape, but fathers and brothers would hang real rapists from the nearest tree if they could.

Patriarchy is motivated by oppressing women, chivalry by seducing and impressing them-having had it internalised into our core both by heterosexual desires and social reinforcement that the primary means of life validation is winning the approval of attractive women.

Around 60% of women under 25 support the benefits of chivalry (read: do not give a toss about gender double standards), and around 80% of women under 21.

I have also observed that the self-confident physical attractiveness of a woman is almost in direct proportion to levels of promoting chivalry and/or engaging in narcissism, entitlement complex, princess mentality and hypergamy. It seems sexuality controls life.

the bolded are the key principles; although I will admit I am attracted to power/status in a woman too.
Obviously, with regards to women, men's primary validation comes from their approval (as we have been socialised to do so-yet also socialised to deny said seeking of approval…)

However what you must note is that the oppression of women is the result of men using illegitimate means of controlling women (read: rape, forced marriage, misogyny) a) when women have failed to have been impressed by wealth, power, status or looks, b) when men lack wealth, power status or looks. Patriarchy would have no need to oppress were society to be less superficial; both parties are to blame in this regard.
