im in a rowing club at uni and cycle quite a lot recently will these help in anyway?

Im in the same sort of boat (no pun with ur rowing intended:biggrin: ) Ive lost a lot of weight and people have pointed that out yet there is still flabby bits that never seem to decrease in size, tis very frustrating:mad:

Lifting weights will fill your loose skin out with muscle. This is assuming that it's loose skin and not flab. If it's flab, you need to lose the flab.

Building muscle is building muscle, toning up is a term invented by the female fitness industry that has no actual meaning whatsoever, but is generally understood to mean a combination of the reduction of bodyfat percentage combined with a growth of muscle mass, resulting in superior muscular definition.

There is no diffrence as such.

You can build muscle and you can lower your body fat %. Tonning basicly means, you have a low body fat % so you build some muscle and you look better because it gives you a better more firm shape. By toning you are building muscle, its just that toning is ussualy about muscle definition and building muscle is just building muscle mass.

Of course there is a difference. "Toning" (or gaining muscular definition) can occur independently of muscle growth, therefore they are not even remotely the same thing.

Conversely, generally when one experiences muscular growth, one also experiences a rise in bodyfat percentage because of the excess of calories necessary for hypertrophy, so the exact opposite of increased definition (or "toning") is the result.

In order of importance to achieving increased muscle definition:

Diet > weights > cardio > supplements.

Unless you consider steroids to be a supplement, in which case you can put them ahead of cardio.

what sort of supplements are we talking about? and does circuit training count as cardio?

well u can expect to be 'less fat' just sit around, do exercise, play football - its a very good way, since it requires u to think, run, technique, teamwork... so you're not just losing weight but gaining other things too

There are various types of supplement. Creatine, protein shakes, thermogenics (stimulants such as caffeine, green tea extract, tyramine, hordenine, ephedrine etc.), nitric oxide, and of course the big boys: steroids and anti-oestrogens.

And circuit training CAN count as cardio, yes. If you're doing cardio exercise such as biking, running, swimming etc. then it obviously counts as cardio, and if you're doing resistance exercises with such low resistance (low weight usually) that microtrauma is very limited, then it is also cardio.

You cant be toned with out muscle, the only way you can otne with out muscle growth is if adequate muscle is already there, which is in essence the same thing, just you already have the muscle, you built it earlyer, but you still need to build it for toning.

First of all, you are using the term "toned" and "toning" to mean defined/defining, which only exacerbates the obviousness of your inexpertise.

Secondly, you said that muscular growth is basically the same thing as defining a muscle, when it really is not in any way, shape or form the same. Making a muscle grow could result in it becoming less defined (and usually does) and likewise you can have fantastic muscle definition with very little muscle mass (you must have seen guys who have ripped 6 packs but weigh about 9 stone).

Please stop talking as if you are educated on the subject. You are not, and you are not helping the OP, who's going to read your posts and think "Great! I'll eat more and make my muscles grow and be ripped!" and then find himself getting a belly.

Yes, increased muscular size will make it easier to achieve increased definition, but muscular growth is only half of the equation.

so now the wya i express something gramaticaly menas i dont know what im talking about. I didnt exactly invent this stuff, so if oyur saying your right and im worng what your really saying is that al the experts in the field are wrong.

Thank you for telling me im not educated on the topic iv done lots of reading up on it.

Of course making a muscle grow can make it less defined, if oyu increase your bf% but like i said all toned means is your cut you have definition, but its the same muscle, theres nothing special about it its not like muscle is one thing and toned is another.

If you repute that you are simply wrong theres nothing more to it, muscle is muscle, if you build muscle you have more muscle, if you have low body fat % then you are well defined and there for toned. Even if somepeople may not need excess muscle for toning its not because you dont need muscle for it, its because they have enough already.
