I've heard that Manchester is very strict on this compared to other universities. Is it true that you cannot download movies via torrents or watch them on other online websites (without getting fined/disconnected although I thought the latter would be okay)?

Also, side question: is it true you can get fined/disconnected for watching porn?

Well, I'm sure it says in the agreement that you're not allowed to do such stuff, but I've known people watch live football matches, films and TV shows online, without any repercussions.

As for porn, no idea if it's technically allowed or not, but the same as the above applies.

There is a monitoring service to try to prevent pirating, so you can only torrent files from "legitimate sources" or something but you can watch live TV online without any major problems.
As a single guy I can also assure you that porn is allowed and (hopefully) not monitored..

Unless you use a VPN, which is technically against the terms of service for Hornet, it's not really possible to use Torrents due to port blocking. FTP is obviously not blocked, however, and I sincerely doubt it's monitored. I never found any blocked websites during my stay at halls either.

General rule of thumb is that if it's illegal, it's against the rules in halls. They will keep records of what you've visited, and the penalties if you're caught pirating can be severe (inc disconnection).

That said, I've never actually come across anyone who was caught and punished for pirating - take from that what you will.
