I think sometimes it's really hard to detach oneself completely, particularly when it comes to topics like The Holocaust. When I went on a visit to Auschwitz Birkenau in November, I found it almost impossible to be rational and detached. It felt so raw and horrible and real and terrifying. However, I think that schools these days tend to teach in a way which encourages an excessive amount of detachment, turning people and characters into numbers and figures, which makes students forget the individuals behind historical events.
What do you think?
