Hello! Can I put in "Preferred first name" something completely different than my real name? For example, if my name is John, can I put there William?
    Thanks.

It might cause a problem in future, unless you choose a middle name that you already have. All uni documents - including your final degree certificate - will be in the name you give at this point. If it doesn't tie up with other docs like your passport or birth certificate, your degree cert might not be accepted. It will also massively complicate Student Finance, where your application has to match both the name on your bank account and uni records.

Someone on my degree course started the process using her middle name, as she didn't want a former partner to find her. She asked about changing her uni registration to her first name at the end of first year, and the uni point blank refused.

No you can't just put anything!

If you are John William Jones but prefer to be known as William, then you can put William in that space. If you are John Jones then you can't

But - take Klixx's advice into account.

Thank you very much for your advice! I think it is safer to stick with my real name then.

Preferred first name is something that you should only use if that was a name you use in everyday life in lieu of your official name. You must also tell UCAS your legal name (that which is on your passport etc).

There are a few situations when people might choose to use that box - for instance, I once came across someone whose mother changed her mind about his name after she'd registered his birth, so the name everyone knew him as was totally different to his legal one. Similarly, if you were transgender but hadn't yet legally changed your name, you would put your new name in that box.

But if I'm called differently to what my legal name is and I want to put that name there, won't it cause problems mentioned by Klix88? I would not like to complicate things like Student Finance.
I'm going to legally change my name in the future but it won't happen any soon, so I'm not sure what to do.
    Thanks!

So long as you put your official first name in elsewhere, I'd be surprised if you caused yourself significant problems. I suspect it's just there so that you can receive letters addressed to a name you like, but all the official stuff will still be in your official name.
