Hi, I have sent off my UCAS application, having applied to UCL, Bristol, Manchester, Sheffield and St Andrew's. I'm most interested in UCL and Sheffield but cannot choose between the two.

UCL's degree is much more specific, which I like, as well as being in London, which is full of opportunities. On top of that it's at SSEES - one of the most East European orientated study centres in the West, which is in turn part of UCL, a pretty darn good university by all accounts.

    However

I've done some pretty intensive research, and haven't been able find anything about the Sheffield Russian department that hasn't been wildly positive - which is at a contrast to UCL. It's also got a fab student city, much cheaper..everything and it's more northern (shouldn't really be an argument, but it's a pro for me).

    So, which do I choose?

Have you looked at the module lists? If you are particularly interested in an aspect of Russian literature/history/culture that UCL caters for but Sheffield doesn't (or vice versa), then go there. Do you want to learn any other languages? SSEES offers I think the most extensive range of Central and East European languages of any university in the world, and you could certainly do a second language as one of your optional modules or take an evening class (which are subsidised for UCL students).

I've had a look yeah; they are pretty similar modules but at UCL you choose to specialise in politics history or literature - something I'm not sure about but it seems more practical than doing a bit of everything. Oddly, Sheffield seems more flexible than UCL with extra languages - something I would be interested in.
