Crikey, that's a good question.
Art has an inner, intrinsic quality, an intention of depth, an expression of emotion, little practical use.
The artist seeks to explain through an inner subjectivity. He seeks to answer questions with no definite answer, now or ever.
Art is an innate expression of philosophical ideas. It takes thought, creation. It tries to find, express, or explore an idea.
To summarise - Art is the thoughtful expression of an inner philosophy.
(I'm a mathsy sixth former, my subjects are on my profile if you want them :-) )

In short, art is self-expression. The means (paint, instruments, etc.) are just a medium to express yourself.
