"Comparing Lucentio and Petruchio in what their views of women, the romanticised view of females vs an extreme depiction of women as second class citizens"
I'm thinking of having my title being this, my teacher said it was good, and these are my notes so far:
When he first sees Bianca he sees what she pretends to be- he sees ‘mild behaviour and sobriety’, the traits that were desirable in a woman.
He compares her to Minerva, the Roman goddess of Wisdom.
He frequently talks of her in poetic ways, like a sonnet.
He says he sees ‘sweet beauty in her face, Such as the daughter of Agenor had’. Agenor’s daughter was supposedly incredibly beautiful and Zeus had turned into a bull and took her away.
Many relationships are driven by economic and social concerns, but Lucentio doesn’t seem to be interested in this- he loves her.
He also elopes.
He decides he will marry Kate before he even sees her, saying to Hortensio ‘thou know’st not gold’s effect’. This shows he values material worth more than her.
He asks Baptista on the first instance of their meeting ‘what dowry shall I have with her to wife?’
Whilst this isn’t different to what would have happened in the time period differently, the depiction of marriage is different to Lucentio’s.
He later attempts to tame Katherine, showing no remorse for abusing her.
His relationship is driven by economic and social reforms as well as the challenge and the “battle” between man and wife.
His wedding is a public spectacle"
I need some help developing my notes into paragraphs of a good grade (I'm aiming for at least a B) but I'm not really sure of the workload of a B grade and what sort of analogy could be done to get it at that grade.
Any comments on the subject matter and structure of my essay or further notes would be great,
