Knee Ache

Over the last 6 months I've been getting knee pain when I've walked a lot (I wouldn't say 2 miles is a lot though) during the day. I think I walked 2 miles today and now, my knees are killing me, I just can't get comfy, even when they are totally relaxed.

There is specific aching pain above the knee cap all the time and I get pain below the kneecap when I put weight on it when I walk. It is in both knees.

I don't have problems with any other joints. Are they just weak? Should I wear knee supports? Or could it be something worse?

I've asked here first instead of going to the doctor because I don't want to waste their time with something that can be solved simply or they can't diagnose.

Thanks for any info you can give. My knees hurt :frown:

It could be any number of things, but if it keeps hurting, go to the doctor. That's what they're there for, you won't be wasting their time. It could be something simple (hopefully), but the point is you need to get checked up, because it's not normal to be in pain like that. x

I'm 18 and stopped growing when I was 14.. seeing as this has been going on for 6 months.. I'm going to doubt it's growing. Plus, it only happens after 'a lot' of exercise.

it could be poor quality shoes.. excess pressure on your knee joints..

my knees are always in pain after a night out.. heels or no heels.. but i believe the alcohol inflames my knee joints but thats another story children..

I ALWAYS wear trainers. My trusty nike air ones or some adidas ones. Could it be always wearing trainers? I thought they'd be best for walking about in...

Would walking boots be better instead?

I wouldn't get new shoes yet as you don't know that's causing it!

Unless you have flat feet I doubt that's the reason.

I think my feet look pretty normal!

I already have some walking boots so should I try wearing those for a few days and see what happens?

I guess, but I doubt it'll fix anything. No harm trying though.

Sounds a bit like my knees. I can't do prolonged exercise, or run on surfaces like roads etc as it knackers my knees. Started when I was about 15 - went to the docs - and he said i'd got chondromalacia patella aka runner's knee (I was running competitively for my county etc at this age and did a lot of sport)...

It's basically when the cartiledge behind the knee cap doesn't glide smoothly over the knee joint so it becomes irritated and hurts.

Might be something similar.

Anyway, go to the doctor and get it looked at.

Fleece, did you have a scan to confirm what the doc said?

Reply 12

Nope they didn't send me for any scans, but I remember seeing more than one doctor, and being referred to the hospital for something. I dont remember a scan though.

I have that too. Have your knees improved at all as a result of treatment? The reason i ask is that i haven't started any kind of treatment yet but my mum, who's a GP, has diagnosed the condition. Does the treatment just consist of anti-inflammatory medication and physiotherapy?

Yeah pretty much.

It meant for me though the end to my athletics career, sadly.

My knees are ok now generally. Sometimes when it's cold they hurt, and if I do sport then they really hurt, but if I avoid that then it's ok.

Could it be arthritis??
