Even though this wasnt what i applied for (not that my original choice was based on much apart form the name) im glad they've offered me a place, though they've offered tripple A, does this mean they don't want me that much, and as silly as this question is, whats the college like/got and is good for!

That's just how smart we all are at Durham  (Actually, I just looked up your old posts - TSR-stalker style, baybee)

haha fair enuff, I've heard lovely things about Durham (though i suspect its propaganda from my physics teacher who graduated not so long ago from there....)

but seriously, is it any good, and as subjective as it is how does it compare to imperial/oxford and other good places

Well many people rank it the 3rd one from oxford and cambridge. Imperial would depend on how you could feel doing you degree in London regardless of how good the university was, I just wouldn't be able to do it.

hi

I visited trevs some days ago and slept there a night..The atmosphere was really good and the people were so friendly.. But the toilets /showers were a nightmare..could anyone please tell me if this is quite normal (USED toiletpaper all over the floor and lots of hair and brownish stuff in the showers?)
I really hope that particular landing was an exeption??
comments please..

Which landing? (And, no, not normal :s-smilie: ) Also, which day - the relative drunkenness of people can seriously effect the state of the toilets

it was sunday /monday and it was in the J block..I think it is for postgraduates?
But two of the rooms were empty as we could stay in them and still the bathroom was such a mess..
I dont mind sharing and I really liked Trevs, but those bathrooms really made me consider changing college in my application.:frown:

Durham Physics is an excellent department.

According to the times it has been in the top 4 (along with Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial) for the last few years (It was joint first when I applied). I rate Durham and Imperial on equal terms, in fact when I applied that was the decision that I agonised over for some time.

You'll get scummy toilets in all colleges, trust me...
Next time try and get a room that has bathrooms further away from the bar :p:

It's so north and cold though!!, though seriously the main thing that im thinking about (even though most ppl will think its silly/superficial/not important) is that durham doesnt seem to have that worldwide prestige such as ox or imp has, r they generally as well respected, because at imp they said they had good links/reputation and 95% of phy grads were employed after leaving.

I don't understand why they were like that!!! The toilets/showers are cleaned a few times a week, though if you came on a Sunday that's the worst time, as they're not cleaned over the weekend!

But even then, I can't quite believe there was USED toilet paper on the floor, I can safely say I've never seen that in my 3 years at Trevs, honest!!

I really hope that didn't put you off coming here, if it did then I'll be mad at the people who did that! :frown: - Trevs IS awesome!!! Don't change your application over that, as I say, that is a one off incident!!

Shame you came Sun/Mon - I was away in Prague then so wouldn't have seen you!

I would be fairly confident that the figure for Durham physics graduates would be similar to that.

It terms of overall worldwide reputation, Imperial and Oxford are better. In terms of Physics only Durham competes with the two fairly well, certainly in Cosmology (Durham has the Institute for Computational Cosmology, which is a world renowned research team).

Don't pick your uni on the basis of where has the nicer weather, that's just silly. And there is nothing wrong with the north either, OK .

Ahhh, this thread has made me want to get into Durham and specifically, Trevs so much!

The flute choir and toastie bar are just me, and from reading this thread I just SO want to go there.

But it's really competitive for History :frown:

How long does it take from Trevs to the History bit?

Reply 39

I want to go to trevs soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad!!!! I like the idea of it being small and friendly! Just a quick question, how far is it from the language block? Plus you know the library- does that have the same books as say the french department, or would i go there to get books and study- slightly random i just was wondering!! Thanks people :-) I really wanna go but i doubt i will get in!!!!
