Ahhh, this thread has made me want to get into Durham and specifically, Trevs so much!

The flute choir and toastie bar are just me, and from reading this thread I just SO want to go there.

But it's really competitive for History :frown:

How long does it take from Trevs to the History bit?

About 20/25 minutes and it's mostly all down hill if you go via the DSU building.

Haha, suppose I will get fit. Bet I've not got any correspondance from them today...

Ahhh I went up for the physics application day on wednesday and thursday and Trevs seems so nice. I think probably as nice as Cambridge. The hexagons are so weird though (weird in a good way).

I'm not at Trevs but the toasties are the lush...I have become a carb/bread convert since I've been here.Marshmallow ones are the best<3

Also...'the hill'...for the first couple of weeks it will kill you but after that you won't even notice it(or so I've found).

Not been to Trevs but I am liking Cambridge as much as Durham. But they're both so hard to get into :frown:

Yeah the hill killed me for the one day I was up there:frown: But i think everything else there makes up for it.

old thread,i know:redface:
but I had some more questions about Trevs so I'll just use this one instead of making a new..
So, I was wondering, how is the orchestra in Trevs? does anyone know how big it is,how often they practice and if there is an audition to join?

and one more thing..I know trevs has formals every other week (?) how formal/serious are they?
do you really wear your gowns every time?:p: and just curious, what exactly does the gown looke like and where do you get it, I am imagining a gown shop somewhere in durham..harry potter style?:p:

(I have an unconditional offer from Trevs:biggrin: ,so looking very much forwards to getting there!)

If there is an orchestra at Trevs, I'll definitely join/audition (problems of playing the flute - so few audition places)

With the music theme, can you practice your instruments in your room?

Reply 51

Hi Nicki

maybe I'll see you there in october then?
I have the same problem with my instrument (clarinet). always few places in orchestras, I hate all those violins:mad: :p:

If I get 3 As, I'll be there

Yes, in my county orchestra, my string friends were worrying about whether they'd get in, and I was like..."well, I can't play piccolo, so there are 3 spaces I could get, and so many people auditioning"...and there's about 30 violins! There is a huge difference in standard though - I am the "worst" flute, having only done grade 8 in December, and in the strings there are some grade 5 players, and this in an auditioned county orchestra.

But then I do think the strings make a nice sound

how does this 'grade system' in music work? like what do you have to do to get a grade 8, and what is the best? (sorry if this sounds stupid, but I am not familiar with that system:redface: )

Reply 54

Oh, well..

Basically, in the UK, there are grades 1-8, with 1 being the lowest and 8 the highest. Grade 8 is the highest amateur qualification and then above it are diplomas equivalent to different years of study at music college.

The main boards are Associated Board, Trinity Guildhall, and the London College of Music. To get a grade you have to do exam, which usually comprises of playing around 3 pieces, scales, sightreading, aural. However it varies slightly.

I guess if you progressed averagely, it would take around 8 years to get to grade 8, but obviously it's different for everyone and you can't generalise

To give you a taster, this is the grade 8 syllabus for clarinet from the Associated Board - http://www.abrsm.org/resources/clarinet06Gr8.pdf

To make it even more confusing, the grades in the UK are different to ones in the US, Canada etc

Grade 8 aural and sightsinging *shudders*. Got to love it! Don't actually know anyone who did 1-8 all the way through without skipping. x

Reply 56

ok,I see:smile: congratulations with your grade 8 then!

Reply 57

It's a trial everyone should go through during their GCSEs/ASs/A-levels! Haha. I want to do grade 8 in a really random intsrument... x

Reply 58

Grade 8 aural is hideous...haha I just scraped through 13/18 (pass mark is 12)

I did grade 1-8 without skipping

Thanks blablabla!

Reply 59

No way?! You are officially the first person I've come across! Be honoured! If I never have to number cadences again it'll be too soon. Haha. x
