Background noise can corrupt the signal. The results in re-transmission which effectively reduces the bandwidth and causes delays.
Background noise means techniques such as parity bits and parity blocks are required, which take up part of the available bandwidth equivalent to reducing the bit rate.
Another way to counter background noise is to reduce the bit rate to make it easier to read.
