Cannabis help

Hi all...I'm currently on my 1st year BEng Mechanical course...after succesfully completing the required foundation year. I smoke cannabis on a regular say, a small amount only in the evenings...but i think, now, its causing me alot of problems in when im trying to learn. Its making me become less motivated - my concentration has plummeted ...modules such as electronics which i found (dare i say it) relatively easy, im finding really difficult to absorb the knowledge i need.
I've tried to go 'cold turkey' but it was'nt succesful. I vowed to myslef that I would stop smoking before i start uni...but now...5 1/2 weeks into the course..im still doing it...and im really worried im going to fail.
Anyone know what i should do (apart from the obvious)?
Any response would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Maybe speaking to your tutor may help? At the end of the day you are an adult, and instead of preaching to you, they should try and help you. There may even be a support group or something you could turn to.

Or perhaps instead of speaking directly to a tutor first, maybe a student support person, or a student who you study with for extra support?

Maybe wait and see if this is sound advice and get others opinions as I'm not entirely sure how tutors and support would work!

sorry i couldnt be of more help

Err...

I'm not going to be remotely sympathetic here.

You're doing something, which is illegal, which many medical and scientific professionals view as hazardous and damaging to your health, and which you fully believe is causing you problems that may seriously impact on your university career?

Mate, it's quite simple. It's a stupid, immature habit (IMNSHO) and I've nothing but contempt (and a modicum of pity) for those that indulge. Seriously. You know exactly what you should be doing -- namely: quitting -- and you've tried it once but failed. So do it again, or rather, try giving up, not necessarily cold turkey but get rid of the weed.

Stop partaking in illegal substances and sort your life out. This might be the 'obvious' of which you speak, but if it's frickin' obvious why haven't you done it yet?

Well, instead of trying the tough love approach maybe OP need support and the like. Fair enough its illegal, but it can also be addictive (as proved by numerous individuals - one that comes particularly to mind having read his autobiog - Ronnie o sullivan, not to mention some friends of mine as well). Fair enough he has a problem, so instead of having a go at him, try and help him.

Yes, it *is* illegal. That in itself should be (but yet, it's not) enough to discourage most people...! I'd hope that anyone bright enough to consider Engineering as a career would realise that it's a really silly idea. Furthermore, you're all told from a young age that illegal substances are bad for you -- more fool you if you end up addicted. I've the same opinion towards people addicted to smoking from a young age, tho' to a lesser extent.

I really, really hope that anyone considering a professional Engineering career realises just how inappropriate this sort of behaviour is. I bloody well hope that no-one taking stuff like that is *ever* in charge of something that relates to my safety.

Haivng said that, Kartel, I honestly hope you're now realising just how stupid this habit is. As I said, give it up.

Well, i read his autobiography, and he actually went into the priory for it and stuff... was proper addicted - its a proper good read.

as for you anonystude, instead of lecturing the poor sod on what your attitude towards people like (i presume) him, give some constructive advice.

Get off your snobbish high horse, and realise that people addicted to drugs have various situations which may cause such an addiction.

At this moment in time you know nothing of his circumstances in either home or university, and are therefore not allowed to cast your judgement upon him.

Unless, of course, he got into it under the pretence of it being "cool", in which case i take back what i said, and ill agree with you.

From all we know at this point in time, Kartel - get some support from either a tutor, or maybe call frank... and speak to someone who isn't going to cast their judgemental eyes on you.

If you know you need to stop, then start from now, and maybe use it as a time to sort everything out. E.g maybe joining a gym will make it slightly easier to stay off, as you will be feeling good.

Also, maybe worth a read of ronnie o sullivans book - cannabis caused him to have a real dip in form of snooker, and then he overcame it - perhaps you could use some of the same techniques.

PS just noticed that a post which has links to snooker is actually my 147th post! JOY!
