1. Lifelong friends
Being in the ‘camp bubble’ for 2 months means you’re never going to be far from your fellow counsellors at camp. Imagine spending all day every day with like-minded people, of course they’re going to become some of your closest friends! Anyone who has been to summer camp will probably have talked about the “camp family”, and there isn’t really a better way to describe it.
2. You learn you don’t need technology
A first-time camp counsellor may feel horrified when they get to camp and find out that there’s no wifi available, and the only way of connecting with the outside world is via a slow dial-up internet on a computer better placed in the late 1990s. But a few days in and they will have forgotten all about it, and even after they’ve left, they won’t even realise they’re still not using their phone! Everything you need is in the world around you!
3. Making a fool of yourself
Remember when you were a kid and you could do all sorts of crazy and silly things without being judged? Well here is your opportunity to relive your childhood! It’s in the job description to entertain the campers, so you can pull silly faces, dance silly dances, even dress up as the opposite sex, all in the name of fun! You’ll no longer care about judgements in the real world, after camp you’ll learn you can be as wacky and outgoing as you want.
4. Learn new skills
I’m not just talking about personal skills such as organisation, management, independence etc, you’ll never have a better chance to learn how to waterski, wakeboard, sail, climb, ride a horse, play the guitar or do a backflip in your life (and all for free)! When you go back home, your friends back home will be mesmerised at how you’ve learned such things when you were supposed to be working all summer.
5. Sculpt your CV into a work of art
Not only will you have more skills to show for yourself, turning your CV into an international CV will give you plenty more opportunities when you return home, and of course will stay with you for the rest of your life. There aren’t many better ways of spending your summer productively while having the time of your life!
