Yes. That's probably the norm for someone in his position, you can potentially be on that kind of total comp as a first year straight out of university at certain firms (i.e. JSC)

Wow thats incredible! And when does the 150 turn into the massive bucks? Like 500+? Is progression in a hedge fund highly dependent on the fund's return, more so than IBD?

Yes, very dependent on how the fund is doing. I was talking more about trading though, where at prop trading firms you can be on 250k very quickly if you're good (especially the prop firms that give, as a bonus, a % of your P&L as opposed to a discretionary bonus) - but they're also the kind of places where the majority of the new intake leave or get fired within 6-12 months if they don't make enough money. It's probably much harder, and takes longer, to get on that kind of pay with IBD, or in any non-trading position (in fact, it's probably much harder getting on this pay trading at a bank as well).

Considering he was probably on 80 - 100k including bonus as a 2nd year at a BB IB in IBD it is not unheard of. Probably jumped ship to a long/short equity hedge fund. I would believe his salary +/- 25k
