I went to an AA meeting for the first time this morning - I know that I drank far too much at university, more than other students, and it had got to the point where after graduating I was just having a few beers each day just to pass time, which apparently wasn't normal.

Well I arrived there and it all seemed quite open and relaxed, until it came to my time to speak. I introduced myself, and right after I said my piece, I was bombarded with questions about God and Christianity and faith and all that. Now I'm an athiest - I don't make a thing of it, you wouldn't know unless you specifically asked me, but when I said that I don't believe in God, and I don't intend to either - I"m purely there to help with my alcohol problem, I was told that I should leave and that I have no place there if I'm not "willing to let Jesus into my life". I'm not supposed to return until I've spoken to my vicar (which is like, NEVER going to happen!).

Now, I thought AA was supposed to be about helping with alcohol issues, not just another conversion tactic?

    What is AA all about?

Bro, I agree that it is little bit religious. But it may be helpful for you. Keep going there. I think that they try to make you feel comfortable when you do not drink. Because you can get nervous without alcohol if you are addicted to it.
They will not force you to come to church every sunday, or you will not be a Pope. It does not hurt you. Go there. Willpower is not enough singly.
