I know this is an odd question. But I have some lecturers and they don't seem that special. Then you look at their staff page and they're the head of a £500,000 EU funded research project or on the editorial board of a very important journal or otherwise have an element of prestige to them. So how do you tell if that is all hype or if they genuinely are a leading-light in their field?

How is that important to you? And, what do you mean by 'don't seem that special'? Is it the way they carry themselves? Some of the most clever people are the most humble because they have no need to have a big ego. Their work speak for themselves. You are lucky to have lecturers who are smart, recognise but yet do not have big egos.
