Has anyone here studied Korean at SOAS and studied in Seoul for a year? If so could you tell me about your experiences there? Was it hard to find accommodation? Did your Korean significantly improve?

Woooo I am a Korean who is trying to get in SOAS for my MSc degree!
If you come to Korea, which university will you be studying at?
My boyfriend is a foreigner, and it took one year for him for him to master Korean.

But you must know, Korea, especially Seoul is very convenient city to live without knowing Korean.
So... if you just hang out with your friends and speaking English, you will gain nothing in Korea. (I saw many of these.)

I'm going to br studying Korean at SOAS in September so I'm wondering this too.

The universities are Korea University and Sogang I think :-)

Hi, Envy you as I am still waiting for the admission result from SOAS..
Korea university is one of the top Universities in Korea, and you will enjoy more campus life than Sogang. I graduated from Yonsei, which is the rival University of Korea, and we have many joint festivals and sports competition in May and September. It's a whole lot of fun.

However, Korea university is not in the center of Seoul, for that reason we(Yonsei) always teased them as rural kids.

Sogang university is right next to my school, Yonsei. It has a small campus, but I heard their Korean language program is one of the best. Also, it is located in the heart of Seoul.

    About the room in Korea....

You need deposit money to get a cheap but 'good' room.
Rooms in Seoul are not expensive expensive compared to London... I think!

But for the nice room, you need a certain amount of deposit money, which you are going to get back when your contract overs.

Average rental fee nearby Sogang area, (don't know about Korea university, but I think it will be similar or cheaper than ones in Sogang) is

    $5000 deposit $500 (monthly)

I lived nearby Sogang for around 6 years (2008-2013)
    My rental was like below:

    1. a Board room (Ha-suk, it's similar to homestay...which (usually) doesn't have the deposit money, and they give me the breakfast and dinner. share bathroom with other students.if you like to socialise with people, I recommend you this... however, it would be a little uncomfortable to share things with others... I didn't like it at all) - $500/months

    2. One-room (around 12m^2-15m^2) just in front of my school - $10000 deposit, $550/month

    3. One-room with shared kitchen, toilet and shower (9m^2) - $3000 deposit, $370/month

Hope this help. The living cost would be enough around $600-$700/month.
