Has anyone had a part-time job during medical school? If so, was it hard balancing the work load as well as your job?

    Any experiences?

I know people who did bar work or other studenty jobs during pre-clin. During clinical medicine, those who work seem to do it on the weekends - it would be pretty difficult to go to placement and hold a job down during the weekdays tbh. I'm getting back most evenings at 7 or 8, not sure I'd be able to have a job on top of that too.

How far are placements for you?

I'm in GPland at the moment and it's not very far at all - the reason I'm getting back so late is that the surgery runs quite late most evenings so when I get back home at 7 that's with me leaving early! As a side point, this proves how misinformed people who think GP is a cushy job really are.

In terms of distance from the med school, our hospital placements range from 7-40 miles. I think it would be virtually impossible to do an 80 mile round-trip each day and still manage to work in the evenings - welcome to clinical medicine!

Yes. It was definitely possible at my uni if you had decent time management skills. Although, it becomes more challenging midway through the course when you switch to being on placements regularly.

Yes totally possible, but you have to be lucky to find work that's flexible enough. In fact in uni holidays, I had 2 jobs, and held down one during term time. I only gave it up the month I graduated in 5th year because I didn't want to get taxed loads when I started F1.

My parents couldn't help me out financially, so it was sort of a necessity, but it actually meant I was a more mature person at the end of med school, with a wider skillset I think.

I did HCA bank work during my holidays in pre-clin, really recommended. Very well paid for a holiday job if you work weekends and long days etc too!

Totally possible for weekends/late evening starts I've always managed.
