Does anyone have any tips or resources for how to write a good essay (to a first class standard)?

It would be helpful to know your subject, and perhaps give an example title you might be working with, to make it easier to tailor a response to your question.

General advice includes maintaining a good sense of flow and logical structure, referencing quotes and others' ideas properly, and adding novel ideas and critique of your own. A lot of the more stylistic elements of essay writing are subjective, and what what makes for a good introductory/concluding style, body structure and suitable rhetoric varies depending on the subject and individual preference.

Of course, given that you're asking the question within the context of a set course, there will certainly be an examiners' mark scheme that you should have access to, which should state what you need to do to meet the criteria for each of the classification stages.
