For fashion journalism, they will be looking to recruit students that can demonstrate an enthusiasm for writing and a willingness to reach a professional level. As such, it'll be important to show that you're familiar with media in all its forms from newspapers to television, magazines to radio, and the internet (especially social media).
By extension, you must show evidence that you're actively engaged with current affairs and can apply this to your own writing. They will need to see that you can form considered judgements based on substantiated sources.
As an aspiring journalist, you should try and provide an example that shows you can appreciate how words and pictures work well together to form a narrative and/or theme.
The content of your portfolio should include essays that are preferably journalistic in nature, but feel free to include academic and creative pieces too. Photography is a nice bonus, but it's not necessary unless it's requested specifically.
Good luck.
