Public opinion

For my dissertation, I am looking at the relationship between pornography and violence against women. What are your thoughts and opinions on this subject matter, please do not share details of any personal experiences.
I think any connection between the two has been blown up out of all proportion.

yes i agree with you to a certain extent.. what are your thoughts on pornography encouraging men to be violence towards women because we can't forget that some porn is violent.
Yes porn can be violent. Thats why it should be discouraged just like violent movies should.
Wow, what a difficult subject to do. Well done to you.

I'm not sure. It's difficult to say as I haven't seen any data. But I would assume there isn't a large relationship - people tend to dissociate between what they do and reality, and there is also the distinction between reality and fantasy.
Could be mediated by other factors though, I imagine?

Well no we can't forget porn is violent that is true. But likewise with violence in films, television, video games etc. I'm not at all convinced that violence in any of these things encourages men to be violent towards women. There is a distinction between fantasy and reality that the vast majority of men understand.

My taste in pornography is more geared toward women pleasuring themselves, generally self-made videos, and my attitudes concerning violence toward women are the same as toward men: it's abhorrent. Likewise, I would defend myself equally from a woman as from a man, should a violent situation arise, most likely by pulling an arm up the back (having a brother who needs restraining from time to time teaches you a thing or two, ha).

That being said I think any perceived correlation is overstated; pornography is like any other film, just a fantasy, not real.

Hi guys,
your opinions are all very interesting. Most of you are saying that you believe the correlation is over stated so what are your thoughts on all the research that has been conducted that provides there is a link between the two? Do you believe this to be a lie? What about men who have gone as far as killing women after watching violent pornography?
