15 year old girl see's theaperist about her probs....
It is my understanding that the theapist has to take everything said in confidence and not involve other people i.e school, or parents without the girls consent?
Is this correct?

I am pretty sire that you have to over 18 then they can't involve anyone.

I don't think they will tell anyone but i think depends on how serious the matter is, if it is affecting the young girl really badly then her parents will be notified as she is too young to be able to deal with all that stuff.

If you believe she's not handling it then inform her parents but do let her know you plan on doing that.

With her parents that isnt possible...
N if she thinks anyone will be told of what she would say in councelling, she wouldnt go...

We're talking about you I assume?

Under certain circumstances, others will be informed. But you should usually be informed of this beforehand.

PM me the circumstances, and I can tell you if its ethical.

Reply 5

I believe it's confidential unless they believe that the minor is in immediate danger.

Reply 6

^ correct. Unless you are a minor being abused/at risk or suicidal

Anything "at risk" could be considered; though it depends on the parents.

Self harm, abuse from teachers, needing psychiatric help etc could all potentially fall into that category....

The councillor could be opening themselves up potentially to a big lawsuit if they do not report this kind of thing.

they won;t nessissarily report self-harm. teachers might, but i think councillors only will if there's a danger to your life.

Over 16 I think you have to be before they can't tell anyone. They can't tell anyone unless they think you're at risk as others have said

Not true.

Gillick competance applies to those under 16 (over 16, confidence is guaranteed except in certain cicumstances - possibly notifying the DVLA of drivers with epilepsy, possibly reporting child abuse, so on). If the patient is under 16 but judged by a doctor to be competant to make informed, rational decisions with regard to their treatment then confidentiality can be maintained.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillick_competence

As a result of a further ruling in 1990, a child who is deemed "Gillick competent" is able to prevent their parents viewing their medical records. As such, medical staff will not make a disclosure of medical records of a child who is deemed "Gillick competent" unless consent is manifest.

Correct, unless there is a fear that the child may be in danger of abuse, whether violent or sexual - in which case, they are entitled to involve social services.

I was in a hospital today and i remember reading a sign, which said something along the lines of
"patient information is confidential, unless the wellbeing or safety of a child is concern."

Reply 14

I wrote a really sh***y email to the local hospital cos they wrote a letter addressed to my mum asking if i still wanted an operation. There was a deadline to it, like, if it wasn't replied to then I couldn't have it. I found it on the deadline day. Thing was, I was 16 at the time, so they should have written to me and my mum shouldn't have been involved at all.

Funnily enough, I got a letter saying that I was going to have my treatment in a private hosptial, but on the NHS

but no, if you go to the doctors or another proffessional, they can't tell anyone unless you're in danger. Like all those mums moaning 'cause their 14 year old daughters have had abortions

Reply 15

^ and blaming the doctors for letting them have abortions. yeah. blame the doctors . . .

Is that your view or the view of the establishment.

It really depends on the issues involved, if theres any sort of child protection issues or the child is at risk then they might need to involve other agencies.
