Can you be a criminal solicitor or is this just a barrister, what is the difference?

Yes you can. If you want to be a solicitor then you would complete your law degree and then do the Legal Practice Course and get a training contract with a legal firm.

If you want to be a barrister then you would do your degree and then a Bar Vocational Course and then get a pupillage at a barristers chambers.

You can also be a solicitor advocate which is a solicitor who has rights of audience in crown court. I am not too sure about the finer details of this though, sorry.
