My take home pay at the moment is about 2600 per month. I work an average of 43 hours per week on my current rota.

Its an average. Some weeks I may work unto 72 hours but then Ill get a week off.

I want to be an orthopaedic surgeon.

I was surprised at how little immediate bleeding there was. I expected more blood.

Then I was more worried about being asked questions relating to the surface anatomy rather than thinking about my internal reaction, I guess.

Trauma and orthopaedic surgeons are notoriously bad at medical management of inpatients. So much so than an entire speciality (Orthogeriatrics) was created just to help them.

The way I was trained is at odds with this type of surgical approach. I think already and as a registrar this is going to help me run the ward efficiently where my colleagues might struggle.

Yes, right now my social life has been quite complicated but I actually loads of time free on the weekends and after 4 most days.

Depends entirely on how dedicated you are. For me it wasn't too hard. I wanted to have a london training post to be near where I live but birmingham ain't so bad.

I was and am still unhappy about how little I get paid. That was before I really got stuck into surgical training though, now I don't think ill change.

Well, I'm not quite an orthropod yet but I definitely want to be.

Basically, its a branch where not that many people die.
I enjoy the physics involved
Private practice is excellent at the top level
My dad is one
All the surgeons I met during my more junior training were quite chilled and cool guys.

Best

1. The feeling you get when you do a dynamic hip screw operation (newbie operation) and in the trauma meeting the next day, the bosses are like 'good work, you're making our senior trainees look bad'.

2. When you, and I mean exclusively you, do something that actually results in a patient's life being made better or even saved. Very rare for this to actually happen. But for example when you realise that a patient has a certain infection and you pro-actively start Antibiotics and they make it off the ward alive whereas if you hadn't and some dodgy locum doctor had found them two days later, they would have died.

3. There's this girl...sort of in love with her.

Worst

1. Pay :P
2. Night working
3. Managers
