The reason they were killed is because the Reds were concerned the Whites were going to reach the Tsar and his family and abducted them. The decision to kill them could also have be rushed and panicked because if the Whites manged to abduct the Tsar, the political parties such as the Tsarists would see light at the end of the tunnel and morale would rise. Also, the peasants would go back to supporting the Tsar as that's what the Russian Orthodox Church would have told them to do; they were very loyal to the Tsar. Therefore, the Reds would lose and communism would be stopped.
