I'm a first year at uni and all of my friends are from random halls. I was unlucky with flatmates this year as none of them go out or socialise, and now some people from my course who live in my residence seem to have founded their social clique. There are really nice to me when we bump into each other but they don't invite me to nights out or such - which I don't expect as we're not close.

My question is how can I get close to those people without seeming desperate or weird? Should I just message them on Facebook to make small talk?

    'Hi X,

I'm at a bit of a loose end and could do with some socialising, you doing anything interesting at the weekend? Hope you're finding the course ok, I think it's a bit blah.

    See you later,
    Y'
