    I think that it's slightly over 30% compared to Britains 23%. Not sure though.

    These people either have Scot Irish or English background. There ancestors have been in the states since the 1600s, so they just say American.

    Self reported. Participants were asked what their main ancestory was. It's interesting because in the 80s, English was by far the most popular answer, but now it seems to be German.

    The change is interesting, do you have a map from the 80s for comparison.

    Personally I don't like to take self-report studies too seriously, I just don't trust their accuracy.

    I couldn't find the map, but I imagine, that the main difference would be that the south east area of the country where many said American, would instead be filled with English and Scotch Irish. In other words, the south would be light purple instead of light yellow.
