"Toxic carpet fumes"

Ok, it's a bit of an odd problem, but we walked into German today, and instantly we were met by this icy draught. We noticed that every window was open in the room; despite the fact that the temperature was so cold. We asked our teacher why she had them open, and she asked us if we remembered when the new carpet in the room was laid down, and the smell which lingered for weeks afterwards.

Anyway, to cut a long story short; apparently the carpet has been causing potentially toxic fumes to be in the room, and some of the languages teachers have been feeling ill as a result, and experiencing "swollen eyes" and other medical complaints. Everyone was kind of worried, because it sounded pretty serious, and lots of us haven't been feeling so well recently..

I'm not sure why the school hasn't done anything, but is the glue which carpets are stuck down with really that much of a health risk? Some articles on Google claim that they contain carcinogens.. I really hope not.

Well pitty they couldn't move you all to another room just for that day, because i been in freezing class rooms before and it's impossible to concentrate during the lesson.

It was rather. Plus every time someone else came into the room, they said: "Why is it so cold?" and we had to go through it all again. :p:

We're only in there for 1 hour at a time, 5 times a fortnight; but it's still a tad worrying. Especially considering the teachers who spend time in there have said they've started to notice that things are actually wrong medically. I personally would be happier to just find another room.. :p:

try breathing in some asbestos for an hour.

I don't think they make carpets from asbestos anymore; in fact I don't think they've ever made carpets from asbestos.
You are meant to let new carpets air for a while though because of the glue and the loose fibres that come off when they're new.

Studies show that concentration is actually impaired in very warm rooms, as it tends to make people feel sleepy. Concentration is around average in the comfort zone, and slightly enhanced a little below comfort temperature. Too far below and concentration again tends to be impaired, because people focus more on how cold they feel. Just thought that was interesting hehe.
