As many of you are aware, the 15th of November will see Glasgow's Student Representative Committee holding a referendum on NUS affiliation.
In the interests of the university, its unions, and its students, you MUST vote NO to affiliation - there are no perceivable benefits for students - on top of a £50,000 per annum affiliation fee, students will have to pay a £10 fee, should they want an NUS card - a card with little real value, considering the vast majority of student discounts are tied to the fact that you are a student, not that your university is a member of the NUS. Our SRC represents Glasgow on a local level - NUS membership would see our representation swallowed up by a massive, national organisation; wouldn't you rather have issues with our university dealt with on campus?
I should point out that I am not involved with either the yes or no camp - I am just putting forward my feelings on why the NUS should keep out of Glasgow University.
I just hope that the majority of Glasgow students pull their fingers out of their arses in regards to this issue. The last large scale student vote had a, what, <10% turnout? A ****ing disgrace, in the words of Bernard Manning.
and as for that happening again, I'm sure I read somewhere that there needs to be something like 30% turnout for it to carry.
otherwise, another referendum will be held
Hmm, I forget exactly what it was for, but I was told that by someone of the SRC, who was understandably quite irritated.
If someone has the vote, it should be exercised.
Well, in fact Nathan, my numbers are incorrect, and your turnout figure is also off(PEDANT!). This referendum at least, needs 15% to carry, and the last SRC elections had a turnout of 4%.
They will easily make the 15% this time - people actually hate the NUS with a passion. The only issue will be if the NUS bus supporters in to Glasgow like they have in the past at other unis, to drum up support, and people are taken in by their stinking chat. But people at Glasgow aren't that stupid...
