say if a uni is deciding between 2 kids and they see 1 of them has AAB in chemistry maths physics, and someone else has AAA in history, french and geology (this isnt me)

will they/are they allowed to pick based off the subjects that one does considering maths is a lot harder than history (imo)

It depends what the subject requirements are. If it was an application for engineering then I guess the student with maths would be preferred.

If universities prefer certain subjects, they will usually list this on their website. In the scenario you describe, the second person would definitely be preferred for most non-STEM subjects. Most science subjects usually specify you need 2 or more sciences at A-level, which obviously the second person doesn't have.

Maths and history test different skills- some people find essay writing really hard, so wouldn't do well at history.

Universities are, however, allowed to make decisions based on pretty much anything they like.
