simple harmonic motion amplitude/frequency graph confusion esp re: resonance, damping watch

    • Thread Starter

    I have a graph:

I am to understand that the greatest amplitude ~happens~ only at the natural frequency and cannot be surpassed even by frequencies higher than the natural frequency, but that sounds a bit wrong? HOW come the amplitude is not increasing as the frequency is increasing even beyond the point of amplitude-at-natural-frequency, as it has been up until that point? AND why is the amplitude decreasing gradually like that?

You should think of it the other way around. The amplitude of oscillation increases towards the natural frequency, rather than decreasing away from the natural frequency.
