Hi,
I am doing Geography GCSE, AQA.
I am struggling with the different types of questions and I just end up writing the same way for every question.
For example:
  • Discuss...
  • Explain...
  • Describe...
  • Outline...
  • Compare and contrast...(this one is fairly obvious)

Please help with what the differences are between each one

Thanks in advance,
Marcus T

Discuss: give both sides of an argument (for and against) and come to a conclusion

Explain
: Provide the causes of a feature, phenomenon or pattern, This usually requires an understanding of processes.
Explanation is a higher-level skill than description and this is reflected in its greater mark weighting

Describe: Provide a picture in words of a feature, a pattern or a process.

Outline: Provide a brief overview of all the relevant information

Compare and contrast: Describe and point out the differences between at least two features, events, patterns and processes.

I was given these terms for AS Geography but I'm pretty sure they're all the same

For description questions use the GCSE method:
General
Comment - say what you see, a really obvious thing about what your being asked
Something Specific - quote a figure: "..for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge..."
Exception - what doesn't abide by this rule: "...on the other hand Hawaii is a hotspot in the centre of the Pacific Plate..."

For explain imagine your teacher is in the exam whispering in your ear: "Why?" This helps if you have a really creepy teacher, or with a really strong accent.
