Doing something nice for a friend? watch

My friend graduated from University of Manchester this summer. He's doing extremely well (in my opinion) considering his circumstances. He grew up poor (I remember getting eviction notices through the door when I was round there once), in a council house with a family with no university graduates. His youngest brother died when he was in year 9, and his dad committed suicide a year later.

I'm sorry for all the details but I want you to understand the circumstances. Now he's coming back to his hometown (where I live) and I want to do something big to show him how proud everyone is. Has anyone got any ideas of what I can do? I don't want to go over the top though!

Sometimes, smaller things work best. Maybe you could get together a card, or a video which has messages from all his friends? Or maybe you could throw a party (it doesn't have to be anything huge, just a small surprise with a few friends). You could go out for a meal, anything really!

You could make him a scrapbook with his good friends of good memories and his accomplishments as a gift from everyone and throw him a small party?

Do you agree with the proposed ban on plastic straws and cotton buds?
