Sleeeep

This is just a general thread on sleep! What is the average amount of sleep an 18 year old is supposed to have? I feel 'sif I can't even get enough sleep even if I sleep from 12am-3pm :frown: Do you guys wake up with just enough time to go to college/uni (rushing around trying to get there on time) or do you wake up with plenty of time to relax and watch TV or something? I want to change my sleeping habit and go to bed around normal time and wake up at 5 so I don't have to be stressed thinking "bugger I'm late!" Anyhow.. what time do you sleep usually? What's the normal time to be sleeping? I would say around 12.00, but I always end up being tired constantly, so maybe that's a bit late? I do know people who do all nighters quite regularly, and I worry coz if I did that I'd probably die! Are there any cures apart from caffeine to make you stay alert? (apart from cold showers). Riight, I didn't realize I could ask so many questions about sleep.

Another thingy, Firefox always makes my posts clump up together without paragraphs even when I put them in.... anyone know how to get rid of that, thanks!

You're suppose to get about 8 hours every night, but that varies are evryone. And if you sleep too much you can still end up tired. Personally I sleep for about 6 hours a night and feel fine.

6-7 hours for me is good.

Don't have afternoon naps.
I'm a night person. I stay up all night and do work/catch up on the internet, go to lectures in the morning then sleep in the late afternoon and early evening. Works fine for me.

I'm just always knackered when I get up with an alarm, even if I've had hours and hours. Best "I still made it" oversleep ever this morning - it seems I can get out of bed and be out in 7 minutes, including putting contact lenses in! What was I talking about?

the sleeping conditions are important: are you comfortable in your bed? the only time i ever stayed in halls, i "slept" all night but may as well not have done. the mattress was full of springs, only 3 ft wide, and about 3 ft off the floor, and i had to share it with my (then) 3 year old. good comfortable sleeping place is a must

I'm quite glad I just woke up half an hour ago. Sunday night I managed 2 hours sleep (5.30am-7.30am) and fell asleep at 6pm yesterday so I'm glad I've got all these early peaceful hours to do my work

I've got terrible sleeping problems at the minute so i really do empathise (is that the right word..i always get confused between that an sympathise?) with you!

My doctor has put me on sleeping tablets and while this may be not at all necessary for you i'll share what he said for any others who are interested:
Hot shower / bath before bed - relaxes your muscles.
LOUD MUSIC! - stimulates the nervous system giving you a rush but after about 10-15mins it has the complete opposite effect and you suddenly don't feel alert but sleepy!
Lavender on your pillow.
Get up at the same time everyday - if you have to have your parents / mates knock on your door then do so!
No procrasting on tsr til 4 in the morning might be another one to suggest.. (I should now take my own advice!)
Finally - theres no "set" right amount of hours of sleep you need.. whilst i may need 7 hours, someone else my age may need 12..

With regards to being too sleepy - don't sleep during the day - that's going to mess up your body clock!! And try berocca -(i really don't know if it keeps you awake but it definitely makes me more alert.. i love the stuff!)

If I'm woken by an alarm I feel crap- I I'm woken by a person/phone/just wake up naturally I feel much better no matter how long I've slept...!!

Hmm... I think I need about 9 - 10 hours of sleep, but it seems like most of the time I feel refreshed, yet sleepy when waking up. When I sleep for about 6-7 hours, I wake up pretty fast.

And that is weird...

I wish I was like that, I need 8 - I also need to start going to sleep earlier than 1am I think, if I wanna get up for my 9am exam on the 14th

Cool flag today BS:biggrin:

On normal days i.e. with lectures etc the next day id say 6 hours is enough sleep for me to be fine during the day. If i get less e.g. 3-4hours, id either fail to wake up, or if i manage to force myself up, ill definatly feel the effect later in the day usually late afternoon.
Other days, like holidays, or when i havnt got anything planned the next day, i can sleep for hours.
Ive even gone to bed when its dark (e.g. 4am) and woken up when its dark (e.g. 5pm) - feels like ive missed a day of my life!
Then again sometimes i can go to bed late, but for some reason wake up naturally early the next day (hate it when that happens)

Just so you all feel better, take solice in knowing the fact that I have yet to go to sleep.

An effort to get my bodyclock correct again.

I need lots of sleep. I prefer to have early nights and then wake up early, coz then I feel like I have the whole day infornt of me. But sometimes I can just sleep for ages, I'll sleep for like 14hrs straight, I like to sleep.

Too much sleep makes anyone feel crap. Aim for 9 hours.
