haha, okay but how could i potentially start a conversation? say if theyre walking towards you, and they smile, and then you smile back, by the time youve smiled back, youve passed them, i couldnt possibly imagine stopping and turning around to chat

I don't tend to want to start conversations with people i happen to pass in the street, but if they smile at me, i politely smile back or if i'm in a really good mood i might say good morning or other appropriate greeting for the time of day.

Smile back, or say good morning, it's just politeness.

I'd get really quite creeped out if I smiled at someone in the street and they just stared back at me.
