Is Canterbury 'boring'?

So i really like The Uni... but i just want to know ... is canterbury an interesting city? Is there a lot to do? I - coming from a small small town (i mean we dont even have a cinema!!) - dont want to be bored often.,,

Yes i have visited Canterbury but due to travel it was only brief.. so i just want to know....

What is there in terms of cinemas shops clubs eating and dining etc

And just generally have you found it an interesting place?
Are there any places near Canterbury that people tend to go...what is there?
Is it generally a safe place ?

Thanks! Also i would love to hear anyones experiences at the uni good and bad points please! I want to be really informed before i make it my firm

My sister goes to the University of Kent and I wouldn't describe the place as boring. Like many other unis, there are plenty of things to do, and it has a kind of peaceful vibe to it as well.

The university is super close to the city centre. You can go there and be back in like 45 minutes,or even less.As you may know, there are lots of shops in the city centre. You have the shops like River Island and Next - which are quite handy when you're in need of a coat - and the supermarkets like Tesco Metro and Marks and Spencer.Aldi is also pretty close nearby.

Among the main attractions in the city centre are the Cite Crepe and the Fish and Chips (You'll regularly see people with their chips in a paper cone strolling around). There are also regular ''shows'' like a choral performing Hallelujah, the cadet army playing their instruments - and rather rarely walking in military style all down the road - and diverse artists, like guitarists and puppeteers doing pretty impressive things.

The city centre has one main road, but there are many other narrow ones which ought to be visited as well. There you'll find Whittard, the other entrance of Waterstones, the theater, etc. My favourite time must be the build-up to Xmas.It begins in late November,I think, and you will see many other tiny shops mounted here and there. The products these sell are either food or artisanal things.

Life on campus is rather quiet. You'll be taken most of the time. There is the Gulbenkian theater which acts both as a lecture room and cinema.I don't know much about it,except that it was airing Frankenstein live from London. On weekends, you will barely find anybody - except old people with their pets or parents with their little kids - on campus, especially if you wake up at 10 or something. If you're a party animal, you can always go to The Venue,K Bar (my neighbours love going there to get drunk) or simply Origins for a Karaoke party or something like that.Well, all other restaurants on campus offer you a lot of activities.

Finally, the accommodation. If you're foreign to the English culture, quiet, and well-mannered,then you might have a hard time living on campus.Well that depends on your neighbours, but the majority of students don't give a damn about other people, and will just have things their own way.So if don't like to share your toilet or bathroom, get an en-suite.If you don't wish to come across several people while getting out of your building,or cannot stand noise drunk girls make in the corridor, don't take halls. And yeah, people don't respect the rules and regulations here, but I guess that's the case everywhere. For instance,an ******* living next to you might blow his speakers up.Or,what I hate the most, the girls (so young, but acting already married) might bring their boyfriends to stay for days. When you meet these boyfriends, they tend to act all mighty,as if it is their kitchen and their university!

All in all,I like the university and don't regret anything. It does not get that cold here.Well,it does, but not as in Manchester, for instance.I remember in October it was pretty warm and until November I guess. My only problem is with the English youngsters. They are immature, stupid and devoid of manners.I wonder what their parents - if they have any - taught them.Yep.''Not all British people are the same'',but I'm hating on the British right now. -.-

I forgot to mention the volunteering society. It is pretty fun and you actually get 'points' which you can show to your future employer. There is also the Enterprise department which hosts a number of challenges during the year.I think I'll try to do something for the pitch interview. And there are many societies, just not a book club though, which is a shame for me as I love classics.

And Canterbury is a safe place as long as you don't wander in the dark late night.

Hope I helped. If there is anything you need to know, you can pm me or something.

If you come from an already very small town then I wouldn't be concerned in the slightest.

What is there in terms of cinemas shops clubs eating and dining etc

One cinema.
Typical high street shops you'd expect of any medium sized town - Canterbury packs in a surprising amount - most are involved in some student discount scheme or another. Also, plenty of job opportunities (shift work).
More restaurants and pubs than I could ever visit in my four years there.
Sainsbury's/Asda/Morrison's all have large stores. Sainsbury's/Asda more accessible to most students. Tesco have an Express store close to city centre bus station. All deliver to campus too.

And just generally have you found it an interesting place?

Interesting - yes, steeped in history, though there's only so much to look at. You'll quickly get used to things like the Cathedral - a world heritage site which many people only visit once in their life etc.
Places:
Whitstable (bus/car) - beach
Herne Bay (bus/car) - beach
Bluewater (train) - shopping
Ashford/Dover (train) - links to Paris/France if you're so inclined.
London (train) - high speed service makes it so quick to travel there, just shy of an hour from Canterbury West to St. Pancras.

Safe - absolutely. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be sensible; take the usual precautions. However, it topped some chart a couple of years ago as "the safest student city in the UK."

Feel free to ask me to go in-depth if you fancy a more detailed response. In all honesty, I reckon you'll spend way more time on campus in your first year anyway, most people tend to.

Hey, sorry for the delayed reply.

As for the quality of teaching, it will depend wholly on the course you wish to do. I can only speak on behalf of Biosciences (and to an extent physical sciences) - which was fine, no specific complaints really. Generally speakng though, if you need help make sure you seek it out. Unlike teachers, lecturers aren't going to bend for your every need and whim, nor approach you at the first sign of struggling, they'd usually intervene when things were serious. However, when you do seek out advice/help/whatever, any good lecturer will be receptive and help out as much as they can. Don't be afraid to email them/speak to them after a lecture etc. As for the lectures/seminars beng interesting, again it depends on the course. I personally preferred seminars to lectures, just make sure you do the reading beforehand, it'll be way more rewarding.

My regrets centre around just not working hard enough and coming out with a lower score than I would've liked. I was fine in first year, kept on top of it all but when I realised I could do less work and still do well enough, that's when standards slipped. In hindsight, those around me who were constantly studying were going about it correctly. It doesn't mean you have no social life at all in second/third year but just learn to scale it back a bit if you want to come out with a first. It's not a massive regret of mine though as the socialising I was doing instead of studying really helped me develop as a person, which was invaluable.

What do I love most? Tricky one really but probably the campus itself. I visited some friends at city unis and felt it really lacked what a campus vibe had to offer. Not to mention it being super green and a lovely view over the city. In the summer, it's just really cool :h:

I wouldn't say it's boring. It's more of like "the more you explore, the more you things you discover". And UKC is soooo near to the city as well as the train station, you can simply go to London or Ashford!
