Castle Irwell - getting knocked down

John Lester/Eddie Colman - i lived in JL in 1st year (i can give you photos if you're reeeally interested). It has a good social side because there are common rooms downstairs where people can chill, and during freshers week there was always a lot of people downstairs recruiting people to go out drinking/clubbing. It's not as noisy as Castle Irwell either so you can sleep easy. The walls seem pretty thick; i can't really hear anyone from the neighbouring rooms. It's also awesome because although not on campus, you can leave 10mins before lecture starts and still get there on time. the shape of your room can vary quite a lot though: i had a room on the corner of the building so it was nicely sized, but some people in the centre rooms were a lot smaller.

Horlock - i think theyre knocking this down too??

Constantine - knocked down for new accommodation

Bramall - don't know much about this one either. Seems similar to JL/EC but is the opposite direction from uni. I think it's quieter than JL though. And when I visited it, it looked pretty bad. Dirty etc. JL/EC are new so are clean and modern but Bramall looked like it was crumbling haha.

IQ - expensive as **** but has a nice community and social life, worth it if you can afford it.

cosmopolitan/tramways - next to IQ, i currently live next door to it, i don't think freshers really live here (it's mostly 2nd/3rd year students living with their friends). it's a nice place though.

the new thing they're building atm - amazing location and the preview photos look incredible. i'm v jealous that i didnt get a chance to stay in them.

hope this helps. if you have any questions quote me and i'll try to help.

Castle Irwell - veeery active social life but.. I wouldn't call it clean haha. Irwell has parties a lot and so if you're into that scene and don't care about the cleanliness of the place then you'll be fine. I know of people who often have nights where it's too loud to sleep properly and people seem to set the fire alarms off a lot.. So ear plugs might also be a good investment.

Constantine - i don't know much about this one.. It's on-campus and ensuite so that'd be pretty sweet.

Awh thank you so so much that is so helpful!! Haha as much as id like a lively social scene i don't think i could live with mess so i think jl might be a good option.

if you don't mind me asking how have you found the university? I'm from ireland i was over looking at it last summer and i loved it but I've offers from all my other choices so id love to hear how other students have found it just to make sure I'm making the right decision

If you want me to be honest, people are messy wherever you go! One of my roommates in JL left rice out until it went blue, lmaooo. But yeah, living with only 3 other people means it doesn't get insanely awful (I've seen some nightmares). JL also arranges a ton of events during freshers week which is nice for socialising -- I made friends with seven people on the first night, ended up living with them in 2nd year, and now in my fourth year I'm still great friends with them. (One of them was from Ireland too!)

As for Salford itself -- I've enjoyed my time here. There's always some kind of renovation going on, and I can honestly say it's improved so much since my first year. The new buildings are great, the Salford Quays part is immense, and they've recently redone the SU too. I've met loads of great people, had an awesome exchange year, and I'm really glad I ended up coming here. The location is also A+, the train is <10mins into central manchester.

I'm trying to think of negative points... I guess the construction work can get a bit irritating (although it'll mostly be done by September, so I guess you don't have to worry about that). The SU is pretty expensive too.

I guess the main thing to consider is the positives/negatives for your course. (I can't help you much there unless you're applying for physics.) Salford tends to have good industry links (particularly with media related stuff, and things based in/around hospitals). If you have any specific questions free free to ask; I can't think of what else to say haha.

You've been such a help thank you!! Yeah I couldn't have been more impressed with the university, and seeing all the renovations was really impressive considering some of the univerisities I've looked at barely have accommodation!

Ive applied for podiatry and I got to see the clinic when I was over  Yeah that's another great thing there are so many Irish over there I won't stick out haha. I think salford seems to have the best of everything, even the atmosphere! And the fact that it's big is a big bonus aswell!

I can spend hours googling all of this and I still wouldn't get as good information as I would asking someone who really knows what it's like so thank you again!

They've knocked down constantine already and im pretty sure it's horlock court that's going next (for more green space I think? Also it has asbestos lmao). Castle irwell isnt on campus, it's a little way out, I haven't heard anything about them knocking that down. Coincidentally I was talking to someone about this while I was on campus this morning.

If you read this http://www.salfordstudents.com/articles/9-things-you-need-to-know-if-you-are-moving-to-castle-irwell they say its meant to be closing in September 2015. I looked around the actual uni website and they say they're only offering it for 14/15 students so it must be closing! Though from what I've read its like 'paying to live in prison' and there is next to no security, and I'd like to keep my belongings haha xD

Yeah, thanks for the link, I don't know anyone currently living in Irwell so I guess I'm kinda out of the loop. I've just looked at the Salford accommodation page and it seems that JL/EC, Bramall & the new building are the only ones listed? So I guess they're planning to knock down Horlock and Irwell.

In light of this new information, a more accurate summary of Salford's accommodation would be:
Bramall - don't go there, it's miles away and looks like it's crumbling
JL/EC - as i wrote in previous post
New accommodation - looks fancy as hell

Lmaooooo. I had no idea they were planning to knock down Horlock, it was my friend who told me today, and I'm still skeptical because it has a bunch of shops beneath it (inc. a new bike store and the SU shop) so what's happening to those?? The buildings are kinda grim and old though I guess.. And if it isn't being offered for 15/16 students it seems it's probably getting demolished over the summer. Grim.

I was actually thinking of applying to Bramall? I have an unconditional for Media & Performance which was my DREAM, and its meant to be close to the Adelphi Building. Is it really that bad? ( I live in a council house in one of the roughest parts of Newcastle so my expectations aren't high haha)

Ahhh, if you're in the adelphi building then youll be fine, it's just quite a while from peel park. Bramall essentially looks like an older version of JL/EC. It's not bad, just looks a bit dirty on the outside lmao. I also think it tends to have quite a lot of international students and I met a fair few postgrads there too. Im sure youll have a great time there, massive congrats on your unconditional
