EU-Russia war looking more likely?

Poll

If EU nations go to war with Russia what should the UK do?

In the past week or two there have been some worrying developments with the Ukraine situation.

The UK have sent 2,200 soliders & military equipment to the East-http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/11351937/Britain-announces-1000-more-troops-for-Eastern-Europe-exercises.html

Now Cyprus has agreed to let Russia base their military in the country (stragetically this is very significant)-http://uk.businessinsider.com/russia-military-agreement-in-cyprus-2015-2?r=US

So do you think a war is looking more likel between the EU (along with US) & Russia? would all EU nations join together as Cyprus seem to be siding with Russia?

Poll-what should the UK do if war started?

War won't start, MAD as always applies and it would be impossible to stop a war escalating. I still don't believe tensions today are anywhere near their height during the Cold War. Anyway if it did happen the UK would side with the EU, no other outcome is possible.

It's just a proxy conflict. Bad for the Ukranians but won't escalate.
Well the US is pretty willing to arm Ukraine, you know, as long as they aren't near it to see it blow in their face, which from a geographical point of view they are not. No wonder the main European players don't like the idea. Russia has been carrying a lot of military incursions too - who knows how the next one will turn out? WW1 started after a not so relevant royal was assassinated by separatists. European states gladly jumped on the war bandwagon as they had been itching for an excuse to try their new toys "in the glory of war".

With all these sanctions being dashed out and a whole host of countries distinctively sided, the next war could easily start from thin air.
The battle of the Russian-Polish buffer is on.
EU plus USA war on Russia would be madness and amount to a suicide attempt by all the parties involved!!
Ukraine is a trigger to this possible war. It's painfully evident now. So when the US "is pretty willing to arm Ukraine" it's just lack of brain imo!
There are radical nationalistic elements very strong in Ukrainian power structures now.... wella.... maturing in fighting separatists in eastern Ukraine. That is the thing we should worry about actually 'course those nationalists are set to penetrate rest of Europe with this experience and add fuel to nationalistic forces in here! This is quite captivating reading in the context I think

@OP most EU nations are members of NATO, so it would very VERY quickly spread further afield than Europe. The only nation I could think of that is EU, non-NATO and shares a border with Russia is Finland. For the moment, Norway and the US (Alaska) are Russia's only NATO member neighbours.

The same applies to the mujahideen. Afghanistan is even further away from the U.S. than Ukraine, yet who would have guessed that a bunch of bearded folk in the mountains would eventually pull off 9/11?
Do you guys think the east would be better off alone?
No war.

No. The west will expand.
Why is this NATO crap being banded about constantly as if its some untouchable entity? NATO is only as strong as the nations that make it up if they're willing to sacrifice what they have as a sovereign nation for the other member states. There is no guarantee of involvement. Just over half of Americans support saving the UK if attacked. Just under half couldn't care less and lets be honest, America is only interested in protecting its own country's interests. When you factor in France that figure drops below half so I find the concept that America would risk any serious conflict over a country like Ukraine laughable.

It may arm them but it won't escalate it any further than that. Putin and Russia will though and at that point they'll take more of the Ukraine and expand in retaliation. The USA knows what it is doing, poking the bear to get Putin to continue his expansionist policy in retaliation to the EU's expansionist policy giving justifiable means for attack. NATO isn't some supreme overlord superpower military thats going to protect people. People also seem to be forgetting Russia has allies as well and America has been caught blind sided before (Pearl Harbour) - those memories will be deeply ingrained so they'll know the risks and that'll of course be a factor in determining military strategy.

This isn't a middle eastern country that isn't going to fight back with such extremities, this is Russia with serious military power and allies who will defend them in conflict. Putin also isn't a middle eastern leader, he is the leader of Russia and has already proven he is willing to do what he feels is right, regardless of what others think is right. Underestimate Putin at your peril. He will do whatever he can to cement his legacy alongside Stalin and co. and he will do whatever he can to use any sanctions against Russia to whip up nationalistic fever to use against the EU and the USA. The problem with the USA and the EU, especially the UK, is it suffers from a realm of delusion where it thinks because its the big boy it wont get attacked. Putin has already put his own people through struggles and he's willing to do what he can to stop the expansion of the EU.

Also, the likes of Obama and Cameron are mugs. They're not true leaders. I'd put more money on Merkel pushing for affirmative action against Putin before any of them morons. The USA and the UK are the masters when it comes to rhetoric and posture, love invading weaker countries for oil (Why haven't they invaded Venezuela? Guerrilla warfare not appealing  ) and going around the world playing the big I am. Now has come the time for these idiots to actually lead and I am firmly of the opinion both of them will get out manoeuvred by Putin whilst other leaders of NATO countries do actually stand up to it properly. Obama is a puppet and Cameron is a donkey. Expecting true leadership from these is laughable.
4th option :

Let's offer these Russian pilots invading our airspace a British passport, NHS care, housing, benefits, job opportunities and integrate them into society.

We're a welcoming nation.

They are just doing the jobs we don't want to do.
