Bernie Ecclestone knows as much about engineering and the technology behind the cars as Victoria Beckham knows about quantum mechanics. He is a business man, not a technical director.

Ask any engineer, any real F1 engineer, Imperial's aero and mech eng departments are some of the best places in the world to study. Soton is good, but I think it speaks volumes when Honda pays fully for the construction of a 50% wind tunnel in Imeprial's aero department specifically devoted to race car aerodynamics.

Some of the top engineers in F1 are known to be frequent visitors to do research and talk to the professors. The wind tunnel is rented out to F1 companies, heck even Ross Brawn has attended a few of those sessions. An entire research group is bankrolled by Formula 1 teams. Every year since the group opened alteast 1 student has been hired straight into F1 teams. Here's the link, read and weep:

The only reason Bernie has Soton straight to his mind is because Adrian Newey graduated from there, wowee, one of the most overrated engineers in the sport(!).

It's true. Imperial really is the place to go to if you want to get into formula 1. I think most teams have at least 1 aerodynamist from Imperial. At the moment I believe Ferrari employ 6 graduates from Imperial, and at the end of 2004 they had definitely employed 5.
