From my secondary school...1 or 0 a year. From the sixth form I attended, I'd say 15 a year (but it is pretty much one of the top performing ones in the country so..)

Out of interest, how many is that out of, and are you sort of "pressured" / encouraged into applying or is that just everyone's free choice?

My school on average has about 17-18 people getting in; my year had the best ever result with 21 places.

But then my school wasn't exactly average. Highly selective grammar school where we were *really* pushed. I hated it.

Know that feeling. I hate being pushed like that...I mean, I know people who applied just to shut others up, even though they really disliked the idea. Bah!

Well, it wasn't quite like that. I was actively discouraged from applying because they didn't think I'd get in, and mess up their statistics. My head-of-year never spoke to me about it, he called my dad at his work during office hours and asked him to try stop; that, to say the least,m p*ssed me off.

I could say I showed them, but quite frankly, I'm happy to never return there.

Oh right, how interesting! We had quite the opposite tact...our teachers wanted everyone to apply; there'd be all sorts of extra classes, lectures and stuff for Oxbridge people. Never went myself.

How shocking  I would be very annoyed at that!

In my school me and my two friends are the first people to apply to Oxbridge and that's so ****. My school doesn't even want to support us and they are not even giving our predicted grades. I don't whether I made a mistake by applying to Oxford or not.

About 3-5 on average from our school

Your poll doesn't really take into account the disparaity between different schools. My school (a state comp) have, on average, sent between 2 and 5 students each year. My year was considered 'outstanding' because 6 people got offers. However, I was talking to a friend at a Sixth Form College in the next county, and he said his year was a 'disappointment', with only 47 successful applicants. The category 'more than 3' doesn't quite cover it in his case...
Furthermore, there's an issue with how many applied and how big the college actually is! I mean, it's very well me saying 15 got in...but that's out of about 100. Someone else could say 15 and it could be of 2000!

i think we had about 100 people in our year. My HoSF was a really nice guy and if anyone gets pretty much decent AS grades they apply for oxbridge. However no one is encouraged might i add, its just like "oh you want to apply to oxford, kl, u have to hand ur form in next week then" kinda thing. And im sure if they even got ****ty AS grades theyd still be allowed to apply as no one opposed to people applying like in sjuthani's case.

It was around 40 last year for our school, it was down since we usually get over 50 in. Our year has about 200 people in.

my state sixth form has about 800 in a year group, 150 people apply each year, roughly. My year got 40 something in, a slump from last year in which 75 got in.

People aren't really pressured to apply, but tutors were generally encouraging to people considering it, and suggest it to everyone with decent grades etc. Once people actually apply, many subjects arrange extra lessons on a lunchtime etc. and mock interviews (for everyone who'll be interviewed, not just oxbridge), and they felt quite pressured at the time, but that's definately a good thing, and it was made very clear that i could back out if i really wanted to.

I'm convinced that state schools would be much more sucessful with oxbridge admissions if they really encouraged people to try for it, rather than telling good students they don't stand a chance cos they don't have straight A*s at gcse or whatever.

In the history of the school, I was the only person to have ever applied to Oxbridge (and I graduated this year )
