self harm

have you ever self harmed?
im 19 and i got really pissed off with folk and left the club early(got a taxi) last week and basically when i got home i just brun myself with a cigerette in 7 different places on my arm. they obviously left noticable burns. i wear short t shirts all the time cause i play alot of sport so folk notice them. the thing that pisses me off is that the people that seem so concered about them are the folk that made me do it.
do you guys hide the marks or what?
i might do it again just for their reaction.

they didn't make you do it. you did it, there are plenty of ways of releiving stress/ negative feeling/ anything else. you don't need to harm youself.

why don't you try and find alternative safer haelthier coping mechanisms. talk it through with people, look at the situation from their point of view. self harm is dangerous and although a worryingly large number of people do it its not necessary. there are other things you can do to get attention taht don't involve self mutilation.

Aren't there better and healthier ways to get a reaction out of people?

omg its not like im 12 and hanging around with a bad crowd. im 2nd year uni...shiiiiiiit.
people are offering advice and your just throwing it back in their face or ignoring it. what do you want us to say that we all self-harm and totally recommend it? perhaps you should try not to get so drunk so they don't say it. you complain about being treated like your 12 but you show the root of your problem in your own post, why don't you deal with that? and 'well guess that i'm doing something that is really nuts' erm no your not your doing something thats stupid and dangerous and totally avoidable. your not taking this seriously but your posting oon a serious topic that has serious effects on your health.

You're hurting yourself and leaving scars for people like that, who're not worth your time, let alone worth you destroying yourself? They didn't make you self-harm - you chose it yourself. Getting annoyed with someone happens all the time - if you burned yourself every time someone annoys you, it just sounds like you want to be pleased and if you were not, you'll just hurt yourself to get sympathy so people would please you. Sorry but that's what your posts sound like.

If these people annoy you that much, just stop hanging out with them. Make new friends.

I self harmed, never did it to get attention! Ever! I did it as a control thing, it was the only thing I felt that I had control over in my life. When things were going on that I didn't have control over that hurt and upset me I would cut myself with my pen knife or scratch the skin till it was raw. It hurt like hell, but it let me know I could feel. Self harm isn't a good form of control, and it certianly shouldn't be used to get attention from people. At the end of the day, you took the decision to do it, for reasons we don't know, but to just do it again for attention isn't good.

Completely agree. 100%. Couldn't have put it better myself Emily.

Self harming for the attention is so much different to self harming cos you feel it's the only way to truly 'feel'.

I understand you.

Did you place the burned spots in a visible way? Maybe you should try drawing motives and mysterious patterns with the cigarette. You chose which design fits you best.
That would be creative and, trust me, people will look at them.

Body art always entails some "self harm" (also tattooing hurts sometimes), but as long as you don't hurt any vital parts of your body it's fairly okay.

Seriously...

You have to make your own choices about which people you hang around with and/or what you do with them. It's because you're at university that you should grow up and understand what's healthy or unhealthy for you.
Or if you really enjoy so much attention, become an actor or a comedian.

By the way, what course are you studying?
