Youd be surprised how quickly you can stop at 55mph, its only a few metres difference between 55 and 30mph, and if I see anyone on the pavements/looking as if theyre about to cross I always slow down...
Speed Thinking Distance Braking Distance Total Stopping Distance
    20mph 6 6 12
    30mph 9 14 23
    40mph 12 24 36
    50mph 15 38 53
    60mph 18 55 73
    70mph 21 75 96

A few metres ehh? I seriously hope I don't ever drive on the same stretch of road.

    exactly

and its not just whether or not you can stop... its the amount of damage you cause when you hit the kiddy's head before dragging them under the wheels for the 30 extra metres it take you to stop.

The impact is severe, and the speed too, the mass of a car against a fragile head will kill a child, and if the child is lucky, perhaps paralyse or place them under a coma for life. For the sake of getting somewhere quicker, in my opinion its not worth it.

If there were any children around, I wouldnt of been speeding, its just the fact the whole road was totally empty, including the pavements, and its quite a long stretch. And I dunno about those stats, but it never seems as if it takes 53 metres for me to stop from 50

Indeed. It's easy to find flaws in others, when you yourself have none.
