Yes, indeed it is. More than a hundred apply to each uni, which only generally has 42 spaces to offer...
Also experience is favourable so some people argue that it's harder being a young student applying as you don't have the experience and the therefore the depth of knowledge required. (assuming you're a-levelish age)
But I hope I haven't put you off. If it's what you want to do, go for it. I'm waiting on offers now, check out the speech and language therapy undergraduate article on here, might help you get an idea of what it's like applying.
