i know this is different, but a lady at my work suffers from vertigo, and i know she has had her balance affected. she has had to take time off work because she finds even sitting or standing for long periods difficult.
everyone has been really good for her though, and are really understanding as they understand she can't do what everyone else can.

i think if you talk to the people closest to you they will understand and can help your confidence

Sounds to me like ménière's disease... but in my experience I've found that people are normally not always so understanding... I was once told about someone who had to go through an assessment from Occupational health because they took a lot of time off work because of vertigo... and when she went back to work, she was treated like she was a bit crazy because they thought that there was "nothing really wrong"... but this was not the case at all...

In the end of the day, my advice to the original poster is to try to be pro-active about everything... I know it's easier said then done... but that's the best advice I can give...
