Crossing over diagonal white lines?

Hopefully this will be clear enough for a response, if not I'll draw a diagram or see if I can get a photo of the piece of road concerned.

So very recently passed my test and not quite sure on whether its a legal maneuver to do this or not, so thought I'd ask here....

So driving down a road, single lane each direction. On the right is a petrol station, just before the entrance to the petrol station white diagonal lines begin, due to the road splitting into two lanes shortly after the petrol station.

Can you turn right into the petrol station, causing you to go over the diagonal lines, or can you only enter it if going in the other direction? You can cross them "only when necessary and safe" highway code wise...is wanting to turn into a petrol station a strong enough cause for this? Or would I need to go down the side-street just after, turn around, and enter going the other way?
