I don't know what kind of person I want to be

This is going to be a bit of a ramble....but does anyone else not know who they are??

I've never been that into fashion, I wear pretty basic clothes. And sometimes I'll look at people who dress up and wear makeup etc and think wow that must be so cool and they must feel really glamourous etc.
Then I'll be thinking about careers, and how if I had a high paid job I could have all sorts of luxury...buying food from waitrose, kids in public school, designer clothes...

and then there are times when I watch something that touches me,
like someone backpacking in africa,
someone working with kids...

and I think, why the **** would I want to waste my life with material things, I should be doing something REAL and IMPORTANT.

I don't know which person I want to be.

We've all been there. Im in 2nd year uni, and its this year that you have to sign up to all the summer internships with all the big companies if you wanna work for them after. And on the one hand i wanna do that, get rich, go live in new york etc etc..

But on the other hand id like to do a job id enjoy, like maybe open my own bar or work at an activity camp for kids or be a snowbaord instructor...

Its just so hard to decided and so many different options... your not the only one!

Have you considered becoming a superhero?

Thats not fair, Just because yo go backpacking doesnt mean your not matierialistic and people that dress up and wear nice clothes arent all greedy-spending all the time. Some people who know who have done the whole backpacking thing are the most iritating people I know, they think theyre somehow more spiritual than everyone else, the truth is anyone can go backpacking, some of us have done and others just chose not to. There is such thing as balance!

People who dress up and wear make up don't necessarily feel glamorous - might be an act to cover up their insecurities.

You can have a bit of both styles in your life - you don't have to be one person or the other.

I agree qmulstudent. You can be both. I admire people who juggle their appearance, career, and generally being a good/nice person. I've only seen such characters in films so far, but surely there are people out there like that too!

i kind of know who i am although a litte confused about what i want out of life and how im going to make the best of it
i dunno i thnk everyone has their own identity i.e. we all have different paths in life and expect different things out of it
what sorta things were u into when you were younger that might be a clue as to what type of person you want to be
dunno but i kind of always knew i was going to do something medical from a very young age, because i liked helping people, stuck with pharmacy now lol
but being wealthy isnt everything....its good to have ...its usefull...give u piece of mind cus u'll never have to worry about money problems etc like getting into bedt but msot of the wealthy people i know are really the msot miserable cus they spend everything on material things rather than doing smthn real with it.
i wante to do the whole africa charity work theing after i graduate and i still plan to for a year or a few months at least cus i kidan think that would appeal to me
but anyways good luck on finding who you are cus you will eventually

This is gonna sound very cynical. I always wonder about people who feel they have to travel to third world countries to do charity work. If you really want to help the world why not begin now, here in England, theres plenty of charities that need help.

I just get the impression that people kind of want to receive something back for theyre charity. So working for charities in Africa or (third world) you get to work abroad, travel and do something different.

nah you are right "charity does begin at home" but i dunno its kidan of smthn ive always wnted to do....probs wnt get round to it but i'll give it a go

have you experimented with make-up and stuff? you could buy some, wear it for a week, see if you get into it. its well hard to pick a career. are you still in school or college? its about deciding on what you think will be best for the next stage - eg. uni, work experience, whatever. no one can say for definite how thier future will be. research what you're interested in, find what most appeals to you. theres no stopping you backpacking round africa or working with kids

Anon, I'm nearly 27 and I still don't know what kind of person I am. Maybe you won't ever be a particular 'kind' of person. Don't rush to define yourself, just try a bit of everything and see what fits.

ooooh I so know what you mean it's hard! There are so many stereotypes it's like you have to be either the high flyer OR the conservationist OR the perfect housewife it's just silly!
I think for a while I was like ok so what kind of person am I exactly, but now I'd say I comfortably read vogue and wear labels, volunteer at animal shelters and am saving to work in Africa, read literature and listen to classic fm and go to clubs and pubs and sit at home watching location location location- I'd like to say if I'm a stereotype it's quirky or something along those lines :p:

Don't know how my career will figure into it though I'm hoping that will just come to me at the right time!

I would say just do what you want to and what feels right, like if you're really interested in fashion or travelling don't be afraid to try it just cus you don't think you're that 'type' of person- mix and match everything and try and be just what you want to be
